Extra Popp: Morgan pitcher Emily Popp unbeaten

Morgan’s Emily Popp has yet to lose a game she’s pitched in.

The freshman is 7-0 and has compiled a 1.47 earned run average.

Morgan lost its season opener to North Branford 11-9, a game in which Morgan committed eight errors.

Popp took over the pitching duties the next game, a 12-6 non-conference win over Griswold. Including that game, the Huskies (7-1) have won seven in a row. Morgan has made just one error during the winning streak.

“We needed her to step in as a freshman, and she’s been outstanding,” Morgan coach Sal Fiorillo said. “She doesn’t throw too hard, but her ball moves all over the place.”

Fiorillo said a challenging preseason that included scrimmages against East Haven and Sacred Heart Academy, has helped prepare Popp for the varsity level.

“She competed with two real good teams,” Fiorillo said. “I’m not trying to put any pressure on her, but she can compete with anyone with the Shoreline Conference.”

Morgan hosts Valley Regional on Wednesday and then Old Saybrook (9-1) on Friday.

“I have a lot of respect for their (Old Saybrook) lineup,” Fiorillo said. “They’re a good hitting team. They are certainly one of the top teams in the Shoreline Conference.”
