West Haven needs 8 innings to beat Sacred Heart Academy

HAMDEN — Round 2 again went to West Haven against rival Sacred Heart Academy and again the contest was decided by one run in extra innings.

But this time around the game featured more offensive fireworks, especially in the later innings, as the host Pacers rallied from an improbable deficit to tie the game with seven runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.

But in the eighth inning, Jolie Morrell scored on Marisa Pacapelli’s sacrifice fly to lift the Westies to a thrilling 8-7 Southern Connecticut Conference Quinnipiac Division victory Wednesday.

Morrell led off the top of the eighth inning with a single. A walk and a single from Alexis Severino loaded the bases before Pacapelli lifted a fly ball close to the left field line allowing Morell to tag and score from third base.

“This is great, it’s absolutely great,” Morrell said. “Sacred Heart is a good team. But when you come together as a team — everyone contributed to something and it was a team effort — it feels fantastic. It was a great win.”

West Haven (9-4, 3-1) won 3-2 in 13 innings on April 10.

“We knew what was coming for us,” Morrell said. “We were ready for it. It was a great game by both of us.”
