Senior All-Star Game moved to Wednesday

The senior all-star softball game has been moved to Wednesday. The S/M game is at 5 p.m., the L/LL game is at 7 p.m. Games still at the North Haven Athletic Complex (222 Maple Avenue, North Haven, CT).

Class LL, L finals postponed

Saturday's Class L state championship softball game between No. 3 seed Foran and No. 1 Bacon Academy and the Class LL game between No. 1 Westhill and No. 3 Conard have both been postponed until Monday due to poor field conditions at DeLuca Field in Stratford.

The L game will now be played at West Haven High's Biondi Field at 3:30 p.m., followed by the Class LL game at 7. The Class L game was originally moved to Sunday, but Sunday's forecast is shaky at best.

Sacred Heart Academy wins Class M title

WEST HAVEN – Senior Angelika Stamos hit a two-run, two-out double in the top of the fifth inning to lift the No. 23 Sacred Heart Academy softball team to a 4-3 victory over No. 1 Seymour in the Class M state softball championship game Friday at Biondi Field.

It was the first state title for the Pacers (16-10), who had lost in three previous state finals, including twice to Seymour in 2000 and 2004. The Wildcats were denied their ninth title. It was the first title of any kind for the Pacers since 1993.

Freshman pitcher Molly Flowers allowed seven hits, didn’t walk a batter and struck out nine in the win on the same night her brother Gary led the Notre Dame-West Haven baseball team to the Class L title. Flowers allowed just one hit past the fourth inning.

Linsey DeDomenico and Katie Winkle also drove in runs for Sacred Heart Academy. Stamos went 3-for-4.

Maggie Crocamo had two hits and two RBIs and Steph Burt had two hits and an RBI for Seymour.

Class M, S preview capsules

CLASS M CHAMPIONSHIP

No. 1 Seymour (25-1) vs. No. 23 Sacred Heart Academy (15-10)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

Where: Biondi Field, West Haven

On the air/web: WELI-960, www.960WELI.com

What to look for: This is the third time these schools will meet in a state final. Seymour won the first two, taking the Class L crown with victories over the Pacers in 2000 and 2004. Sacred Heart Academy defeated four higher seeds in its surprising run to the final. The Pacers have scored 25 runs in four games in the tournament, and their offense seems to be peaking at the right time. Pitcher Molly Flowers has been outstanding, showing a poise and a maturity often seen in upperclassmen.

Championship appearances: Seymour — 14 (8-6, last title in 2009); Sacred Heart Academy — 3 (0-3, last final in 2004).

You should know: The Wildcats are no strangers to making deep tournament runs and playing for state titles. The senior class were sophomores when Seymour last won a championship in 2009. That experience could give it an edge here.

CLASS S CHAMPIONSHIP

No. 1 Terryville (21-2) vs. No. 2 Hale-Ray (23-3)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

Where: DeLuca Field, Stratford

What to look for: Terryville, the defending champion, returns to the final despite suffering several graduation losses entering the season, including pitcher Beth Grimes, who was a Register All-State selection in 2010. Sophomore pitcher Jamie Bridge has been outstanding in taking over full-time in the circle. Hale-Ray hasn’t played in a final since 2006, and seeks its fifth championship.

Championship appearances: Terryville — 2 (1-1, won title in 2010); Hale-Ray — 9 (4-5, last title in 2004).

You should know: The Little Noises, who won the Shoreline Conference tournament title this year, are an experienced group with seven seniors on their roster. Seniors Maxie Murphy and Morgan Humble are explosive players, capable of taking over the game offensively. Nichisti and junior Rachel Pease usually split time in the circle and both are effective.

Freshman Flowers leading Sacred Heart Academy

Although she may be just a freshman, Sacred Heart Academy pitcher Molly Flowers is one of the reasons why the Pacers will play Seymour on Friday for the Class M state title. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. at Biondi Field in West Haven.

Flowers allowed just two hits and struck out 14 in a 5-2 victory over Rocky Hill in Tuesday's semifinals.

"You give her a few runs and then you start to get that feeling in the dugout that she's going to be tough to beat," SHA coach Ray Ramelli said. "

Although the Pacers have several other pitchers on their roster, Flowers has taken over as the full-time starter.

"The other pitchers did well, but she started to become strong near the end of the season and I wanted to go with her for that reason," Ramelli said. "She started with a bad wrist at the beginning of the year. She got stronger as we went on and we decided to go with her."

The wrist injury during the preseason prevented Flowers from learning new pitches. She's mainly a fastball pitcher who will occasionally mix in a few change-ups.

"I had a wrist injury for awhile so I couldn't really work on the pitches," Flowers said. "I'm definitely going to get a curve ball and a screw ball and hopefully I'll have them by next year."

Said teammate Gina Valentine: "She's amazing. She's always amazing. She's always on her game. She's helped us so much this season. She's a great player."
