State tournament pairings released

CLASS LL
View bracket here.

Newtown (22-0, plays for SWC title today) is the No. 1 seed in a very competitive division.
The Nighthawks could meet No. 4 Trumbull, the FCIAC champion, in the semifinals.

Also in the top half of the bracket is No. 8 West Haven, No. 9 Cheshire (those two SCC schools could meet in the second round), and No. 5 Simsbury.

The bottom half of the bracket includes No. 2 Westhill, No. 3 Southington and No. 6 Glastonbury.

Other teams to keep an eye on are No. 10 Bristol Central, No. 14 Mercy and No. 11 Fairfield Ludlowe.

This division, usually the toughest of the four, is always the hardest to predict. Any number of the top seeds could win the title.

CLASS L
View bracket here.
Waterford, the defending champion, is the top seed and had a first round bye. The Lancers probably won't be tested until the quarterfinals and a potential meeting with No. 9 Guilford.

Brookfield, is the No. 2 seed, and could meet No. 7 Darien in the quarterfinals.
No. 3 Rockville should be tested in the second round by the winner of No. 14 Foran vs. No. 19 Maloney.

No. 4 Fairfield Warde has a potential date with SCC champion Hand, which is seeded the fifth seed. Hand may be playing as well as any team in the state right now.

CLASS M
View bracket here.
There are no byes in this division.
Lewis Mills is the No. 1 seed and could meet No. 8 Lauralton Hall in the quarterfinals.
No. 4 Griswold, No. 5 Woodland, No. 11 Suffield and No. 13 North Branford are also in that top half of the bracket.

In the bottom half, No. 2 Rocky Hill, No. 7 St. Joseph, No. 6 Wolcott, No. 11 Haddam-Killingworth and No. 14 Seymour could all advance deep in this field.

CLASS S
View bracket here.
The top three seeds, No. 1 Terryville, No. 2 Wilcox Tech and No. 3 Windham Tech, received byes.

No. 22 St. Paul, in Windham Tech's quarter, has a good chance of advancing to the semifinals, as does No. 7 Somers in Wilcox Tech's quarter.

In the top half, No. 4 Coginchaug and No. 13 Hale-Ray could meet in the second round. No. 12 Old Lyme is also in that half of the bracket.

NVL tournament pairings

Quarterfinals
Monday

No. 4 Holy Cross vs. No. 5 Naugatuck, 5 p.m., at Naugatuck
No. 3 Seymour vs. No. 6 Torrington, 5 p.m., at Wolcott
No. 2 Wolcott vs. No. 7 Ansonia, 7 p.m., at Wolcott
No. 1 Woodland vs. No. 8 Watertown, 7 p.m., at Naugatuck

Semifinals
Tuesday at Wolcott, 5 and 7 p.m.

Final
Thursday at Naugatuck, TBA

Shoreline Conference scenario

The top 4 teams in the Shoreline Conference advance to the league tournament.

Haddam-Killingworth plays Hale-Ray Monday in a game that will determine seeding.

If H-K wins, they are seeded No. 1 and will host No. 4 Old Lyme. No. 3 North Branford will face No. 2 Coginchaug.

If Hale-Ray wins, they will earn the No. 2 seed and host No. 3 H-K. Coginchaug will then earn the No. 1 seed and face No. 4 North Branford.

These pairings are also contingent on Coginchaug defeating Cromwell on Monday.

Here are the current league standings, and how the tie-breaker rules work:

H-K 13-2 (1 game left vs Hale-Ray Monday)
Coginchaug 12-3 (1 game left vs Cromwell Monday)
Hale-Ray 12-3 (1 game left vs H-K)
North Branford 12-4 SLC season complete (beat OL in regular season game)
Old Lyme 12-4 SLC season complete

If Hale-Ray loses Monday to H-K, they would have the same record as Old Lyme and North Branford. North Branford beat both these teams in the regular season, therefore they are in.

Hale-Ray and Old Lyme split the two games, they have the same divisional record and scored the same number of runs against each other.

The final tie-breaker is the Big East format, where you rank all 12 league teams 1-12, and then figure out who beat the highest ranked team. Old Lyme beat Coginchaug, so they would beat out Hale-Ray for the last spot.

Thanks to H-K coach Jeff Talbott for helping me figure out this process.

SCC tournament predictions

Quarterfinals
No. 8 East Haven vs. No. 1 Hand

Comment: Despite losing two games last week, the top-seeded Tigers are still an overwhelming favorite here.
Pick: Hand

No. 7 Cheshire vs. No. 2 Guilford
Comment: Cheshire won both meetings during the regular season. Can the third time be the charm for the Indians?
Pick: Cheshire

No. 6 Mercy vs. No. 3 West Haven
Comment: West Haven plays at home at Biondi Field here. That's where the semifinals and final will be contested. That could give the Westies an edge.
Pick: Mercy

No. 5 Lyman Hall vs. No. 4 Shelton
Comment: Lyman Hall, the defending champion, could ride the arm of junior pitcher Lauren Zambrano again, as they did last season. The Trojans, however, have struggled offensively, at times, this season.
Pick: Lyman Hall

Semifinals
No. 5 Lyman Hall vs. No. 1 Hand

Comment: Lyman Hall defeated Hand in this round on its way to the title last season.
Pick: Hand

No. 7 Cheshire vs. No. 6 Mercy
Comment:
These teams played 11 innings just last week with Cheshire emerging with a 1-0 victory. Expect this one to be just as close.
Pick: Cheshire

Championship
No. 7 Cheshire vs. No. 1 Hand

Comment: Teams split during the regular season. Both seeking second SCC crown.
Pick: Hand

Seymour's Burt injured

Seymour junior pitcher Steph Burt fractured two fingers in her right pitching hand, according to Wildcats' coach Ken Pereiras.

Burt has been cleared by the doctor to throw, but did not pitch in Seymour's 3-2 loss to Ansonia on Thursday. Burt, however, did play first base during that loss.

It is unsure when Burt will resume pitching.
