Branford bounces back from rough start

Branford remained upbeat and positive despite losing its first eight games this season.

The Hornets had talent and experience, with eight seniors, including five who start, but little luck.

During the losing streak, Branford lost four games by one run.

But the Hornets rebounded to win four of their next five.
“It was just a matter of getting them to believe in their abilities and to not doubt themselves,” Branford coach Chuck Reale said. “The ability was there. We just kept saying that if you work hard, things will fall our way.”

The Hornets’ perseverance certainly paid off.

While Branford’s chances of reaching the state tournament once seemed dim, the Hornets won four of their last five games to qualify in Class L.

“I don’t think we turned things around, we just kept grinding it out,” Reale said. “It’s not like we went from rags to riches, we stayed steady. We took our lumps early and we had some fortuitous things happen in the second half and things went our way.”

A 1-0 victory over North Haven on May 6 was the first of four straight victories.

“That (defeating North Haven) started to get things moving, knowing it was a must win,” Reale said.
In that game, Nicole Carrano reached on a bunt single and then the next batter drew a walk. Carrano scored the game’s only run on Cassidy Murphy’s double.

Branford qualified for the state tournament with a 12-1 win over Career on Tuesday.

“It (qualifying for the state tournament) was tremendously satisfying after going 2-8 and the way we took some of the losses,” Reale said. “They knew the task at hand. This team very badly wanted to get in.”

While there aren’t any bona fide superstars on the roster, Reale says this group is consistent, committed and focused. Murphy leads the team with a .344 batting average.

Senior Lauren Atkinson started the year in the pitching circle, but junior Megan Ferraro emerged as the team’s No. 1 starter.

“When she is on, her ball moves,” Reale said. “She is not overpowering, but she has excellent control and excellent poise. She’s really unflappable.”

Ferraro and Murphy both were recently named to the all-SCC Oronoque Division team.

Foran rallies past Hand, ends Tigers' 11-game winning streak

MILFORD — To say the Foran softball team was ready to play Hand Monday afternoon would be an understatement. Looking forward to the contest after letting a game against the Tigers slip away earlier in the season, the Lions made 11 hits count in an 8-4 victory in Milford.

The Lions scored three times in the first inning and rolled to the win, which snapped Hand’s 11-game winning streak. Foran pitcher Jessica Harkness cruised through five innings before allowing four runs in the final two innings.

Harkness allowed seven hits, three of which were slap hits by Maddie Yaggi, struck out eight and did not walk a batter in the win.

Behind the pitching of Jenna Bernard and the hitting of Danielle Gray, the Eagles rallied with a run in the seventh and another in the 10th to defeat West Haven 2-1 in 10 innings at Biondi Field Monday night.

Trailing 1-0 in the seventh inning, Gray led off with a line drive that carried over the head of West Haven center fielder Alexis Severino. Gray raced to third to start the inning and scored when Sam Murphy grounded to short.

Lauralton Hall continues to grow

A challenging schedule early in the season resulted in a young Lauralton Hall softball team losing two of its first three games.

After winning the season opener against Trumbull, the Crusaders lost consecutive games to Westhill and Masuk.

But then Lauralton Hall won eight games in a row before losing again to Masuk last Wednesday.

For a team with just three seniors, Crusaders coach Theresa Napolitano has been pleased with her squad’s 10-3 record.

“We’ve done well,” Napolitano said. “We’re pretty happy where we are right now. I told them that we would probably take a few steps forward and a few steps back, but they’ve responded well.”

Part of the growing process was finding the right lineup. Once Napalitano made some positional changes, victories followed.

“Defensively, we made some changes,” Napolitano said. “We had a lot of holes to fill. We just had to figure out the best combination.”

Junior captain Maureen Connolly moved from first base to shortstop, junior captain Rachel Landock started the year at third base but is now in left field and sophomore Jackie Brewster moved from left field to first base.

Sophomore Lindsey Spitz, who played in right field last season, started the year at shortstop and is now at third base.

Senior captain Jessica Napolitano has been steady at second base, sophomore Alex Moleski has done consistently well behind the plate and senior Jenna Bump, a first-year varsity player, has contributed in right field.
The Crusaders have used two pitchers in the circle: sophomore Haley Congdon and freshman Kaitlyn Mingione.

“It gives us variety,” Theresa Napolitano said. “It gives us a different look, and we’re not stuck in the later innings with just one pitcher. It mixes it up a bit.”

During the eight-game winning streak, Lauralton Hall defeated a quality Brookfield team 9-2. Napolitano said Congdon pitched well, while the Crusaders offense collected 15 hits.

“It’s always a good win against them because Brookfield is a hitting team,” Napolitano said. “Haley pitched well, and we went in there and put the ball in play.”

This past Friday, Lauralton Hall emerged with a thrilling 2-1 win over then No. 6 Oxford 2-1.

The Crusaders scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning. Brewster knocked in the winning run.

Seymour riding 10-game winning streak

Seymour coach Ken Pereiras recorded his 200th career victory with a 10-2 win over Crosby last Wednesday.

In his ninth season, Pereiras is 201-17 and won state titles in 2005, 2006 and 2009.

“It shows the kinds of kids we’ve had over the years,” Pereiras said. “We’ve had some good players and because of them, we were able to win a lot of games.”

This year has been no exception. The Wildcats are on a 10-game winning streak since losing back-to-back contests to Woodland and Torrington in the second week of the season.

“We lost some tough games early in the season,” Pereiras said. “We have Woodland on Wednesday, so we’ll see if we got better.”

Seymour (12-2) led 3-1 against Woodland on April 8 before losing 5-4 in eight innings. The Wildcats then lost 3-0 to Torrington two days later despite getting 11 hits of junior hurler Sydney Matzko, although Pereiras said most of the hits didn’t leave the infield.

After hosting Ansonia today and traveling to Woodland on Wednesday, the Wildcats are back home for an interesting non-league contest with Morgan (11-1).

Seymour is averaging 12 runs per game and has given up just 24 runs.

Pereiras has been pleasantly surprised by senior left fielder Morgan Scinto, the team’s No. 2 batter, who is batting .574 with 18 runs and eight stolen bases.

“She’s a slap hitter,” Pereiras said. “She’s a good bunter and she has good speed.”

Senior Carissa Wasikowski (.489, 19 RBIs), junior first baseman Makayla O’Hara (.420, 21 RBIs) and designated player Emma Crocamo (.372) have also hit well.

Senior Grace Nisbet and freshmen Raeanne Geffert and Amanda Harkins are all batting over .400. Junior Laura Dieckman has played well at shortstop, Pereiras added.

Junior Katie Petroski, a Register All-State selection last season, is batting .364 with 23 runs and 29 RBIs, although Pereiras said she still really hasn’t caught fire yet this season.

Wasikowski and Geffert have both seen time in the pitching circle. Wasikowski plays right field when not pitching.

Geffert, who is 8-1 with a 0.96 earned run average, is a promising prospect.

“She has a lot of stuff,” Pereiras said. “She works with (pitching coach) Shelby Slie, and she works hard. I think she is going to keep getting better.”

West Haven needs 8 innings to beat Sacred Heart Academy

HAMDEN — Round 2 again went to West Haven against rival Sacred Heart Academy and again the contest was decided by one run in extra innings.
