Southington 1, Mercy 0: Freshman Natalie Wadolowski singled in the second inning to drive in the game's only run for the Blue Knights.

Southington won its state-best 15th title, but first since 2004.

Class M

Waterford 6, Granby 3: Freshman Claire Hurley had two hits, two runs and two RBIs and freshman Sara Buscetto had a pair of hits, a run and an RBI for the Lancers.

Waterford won its fourth title, and third since 2009.

Class S

Oxford 1, Terryville 0: Katelyn Wentz doubled home pinch runner Makena Hillman in the bottom of the seventh inning with the winning run as the Wolverines won their first title.

Allyson Sweeney led off the inning with a double for Oxford. Winning pitcher Ashley Guillette allowed three hits and struck out 15.

CLASS LL

No. 3 Hand 14, No. 30 Newington 3: Katie Omdahl had two singles, a triple and four RBIs for the Tigers in this first-round win in Madison.

Allie Buller had three hits and two RBIs for Hand (18-4).

No. 11 Cheshire 15, No. 22 Simsbury 2: Casey Harding had two doubles, a home run and four RBIs for the host Rams in this first-round win.
Nicole D’Amato and Kierstyn Bourdeau also had home runs and Sara Como had two doubles for Cheshire (16-6).

No. 13 Naugatuck 4, No. 20 Hall 1: Kara Klimaszewski had a single, triple, two runs and an RBI for the host Greyhounds in this first-round win.

Gillian Fortier had a double, run and RBI for Naugatuck (15-7).

No. 12 North Haven 9, No. 21 Fermi 1: Brianne Melillo and Nicole Dunlop each had two hits and two RBIs for the host Indians in this first-round win.

No. 6 East Haven 9, No. 27 Plainville 1: Amanda Jessey had a single, double, three runs and three RBIs for the host Easties in this first-round win.

Talia Loda allowed just three hits and struck out nine for East Haven (19-4), ranked 10th in the Register Top 10 Poll.

No. 4 Morgan 16, No. 29 Windham Tech 0 (5): Emily Popp tossed a no-hitter and helped herself with a double for Morgan (18-5) in a first-round win at Clinton.

 STRATFORD — When Foran tied the game in the fifth inning, it appeared the top-seeded Lions had righted the ship after a somewhat disappointing start to the Class L state championship.

But Foran’s third error of the contest in the sixth inning allowed No. 3 Rockville to score the deciding run and deny the Lions their second straight title.

The Rams, led by junior pitcher Kaitlyn Lajoie, set the Lions down in order in the bottom of the seventh and hung on for a 3-2 victory before an estimated 1,200 Saturday at DeLuca Field.

ROCKY HILL WINS IN CLASS M

Senior pitcher Megan Ruonavaara allowed just five hits, struck out six and helped her cause with a three-run double to lead the fourth-seeded Rocky Hill softball team to a 6-0 victory over No. 3 Granby in the Class M state championship game Saturday at DeLuca Field in Stratford.

Ruonavaara was named the game’s most valuable player. It is the first state title for the Terriers (22-1).

Erin Weber had two hits, a run and an RBI for Rocky Hill, while teammates Emily Thompson and Katie Seaver each added two hits.

Sam Groskritz had two hits for the Bears (23-2). 

WEST HAVEN — With one out in the bottom of the 11th inning and Rocky Hill up by a run, Seymour reached on an infield error.

That didn’t seem to faze Terriers’ pitcher Megan Ruonavaara, who seemed to only get stronger the longer this Class M state softball semifinal contest lasted.

Fittingly, Ruonavaara recorded the final outs to send Rocky Hill to the championship game.

Ruonavaara snagged a line drive off the bat of Katie Petroski and then threw over to first for a game-ending double play as the Terriers emerged with a thrilling 1-0 victory over top-seeded, and previously undefeated Seymour Tuesday at Biondi Field. Seymour entered as the No. 1 team in the Register Poll.

SEYMOUR — Top-seeded Seymour didn’t have many opportunities to score against East Haven but the host Wildcats made each chance count.

With the game tied, Morgan Scinto led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a bunt single and then was sacrificed to second by Makayla O’Hara.

With two outs, Sarah Molin then delivered the winning hit as Seymour survived with a 3-2 victory over the No. 16 Easties in the second round of the Class M state tournament Wednesday.

CLASS LL

Overview

Usually one of the more competitive classes, this year is no exception especially with No. 4 Masuk and No. 3 Darien both moving up from Class L this year.

First-round games to watch

No. 20 Cheshire at No. 13 Pomperaug (Tuesday, 4 p.m.): Rams have been playing well down the stretch and are ripe to pull the upset.
No. 21 Trumbull at No. 12 Norwalk (Tuesday, 4 p.m.): These FCIAC rivals meet for the second time this season. Norwalk won the regular season game 8-3 on April 27.

Of note: Westhill catcher Elizabeth Joseph suffered a concussion in a FCIAC quarterfinal victory over New Canaan and will miss the rest of the FCIAC tournament (Westhill plays in the semifinals Friday).

Defending champion Foran is the top-seed and could meet SCC Hammonasset Division rival No. 9 Guilford in the quarterfinals. The two met in the second round last season.  No. 2 Maloney, No. 3 Rockville, No. 4 Torrington, No. 5 Brookfield and No.7 Bethel all have the talent to win in this division.

First-round games to watch

No. 18 East Lyme at No. 15 North Haven (Tuesday, 4 p.m.): North Haven is another SCC team that could do some damage in this class, but the winner here gets Maloney in the second round.
No. 23 Branford at No. 10 Watertown (Tuesday, 4 p.m.): Watertown handed Granby its only loss of the season. The Indians could be a dark horse in this class.

Overview

This class is loaded. Seymour, ranked No. 1 in the Register Top 10 Poll, and newly crowned champions of the NVL, is the top seed. But the draw is not easy. The Wildcats will face either No. 16 East Haven or NVL foe No. 17 Woodland in the second round, then No. 8 Stonington or No. 9 St. Joseph in the quarterfinals. No. 2 Wateford, No. 4 Rocky Hill, No. 5 Law and No. 6 Oxford should all challenge for the title.

First-round games to watch

No. 20 Tolland at No. 13 Haddam-Killingworth (Tuesday, 4 p.m.): H-K hits the ball well and plays solid defense, and should be a tough out for any opponent.
No. 17 Woodland at No. 16 East Haven (Tuesday, 4 p.m.): East Haven upset Law in the SCC quarterfinals. The Easties have the talent to compete with any team in this class when playing their 'A' game.

Overview

Defending champion Hale-Ray is the No. 14 seed and seems to be peaking at the right time, winning four of its last five. Hale-Ray, Morgan and Coginchaug, though, are all in the bottom half of the bracket.

No. 25 Old Saybrook at No. 8 Canton (Tuesday, 4 p.m.): Old Saybrook made a surprise run to the quarterfinals last season. Can history repeat itself?
No. 19 Coventry at No. 14 Hale-Ray (Tuesday, 4 p.m.): Winner gets No. 3 Goodwin Tech and its junior pitcher Shyleen Ortiz. Goodwin Tech has defeated Shoreline Conference teams Portland and Cromwell already this season

WEST HAVEN – Senior Angelika Stamos hit a two-run, two-out double in the top of the fifth inning to lift the No. 23 Sacred Heart Academy softball team to a 4-3 victory over No. 1 Seymour in the Class M state softball championship game Friday at Biondi Field.

It was the first state title for the Pacers (16-10), who had lost in three previous state finals, including twice to Seymour in 2000 and 2004. The Wildcats were denied their ninth title. It was the first title of any kind for the Pacers since 1993.

Freshman pitcher Molly Flowers allowed seven hits, didn’t walk a batter and struck out nine in the win on the same night her brother Gary led the Notre Dame-West Haven baseball team to the Class L title. Flowers allowed just one hit past the fourth inning.

Linsey DeDomenico and Katie Winkle also drove in runs for Sacred Heart Academy. Stamos went 3-for-4.

Maggie Crocamo had two hits and two RBIs and Steph Burt had two hits and an RBI for Seymour.

CLASS M CHAMPIONSHIP

No. 1 Seymour (25-1) vs. No. 23 Sacred Heart Academy (15-10)

What to look for: This is the third time these schools will meet in a state final. Seymour won the first two, taking the Class L crown with victories over the Pacers in 2000 and 2004. Sacred Heart Academy defeated four higher seeds in its surprising run to the final. The Pacers have scored 25 runs in four games in the tournament, and their offense seems to be peaking at the right time. Pitcher Molly Flowers has been outstanding, showing a poise and a maturity often seen in upperclassmen.

Championship appearances: Seymour — 14 (8-6, last title in 2009); Sacred Heart Academy — 3 (0-3, last final in 2004).

You should know: The Wildcats are no strangers to making deep tournament runs and playing for state titles. The senior class were sophomores when Seymour last won a championship in 2009. That experience could give it an edge here.

CLASS S CHAMPIONSHIP

No. 1 Terryville (21-2) vs. No. 2 Hale-Ray (23-3)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

Where: DeLuca Field, Stratford

What to look for: Terryville, the defending champion, returns to the final despite suffering several graduation losses entering the season, including pitcher Beth Grimes, who was a Register All-State selection in 2010. Sophomore pitcher Jamie Bridge has been outstanding in taking over full-time in the circle. Hale-Ray hasn’t played in a final since 2006, and seeks its fifth championship.

Championship appearances: Terryville — 2 (1-1, won title in 2010); Hale-Ray — 9 (4-5, last title in 2004).

You should know: The Little Noises, who won the Shoreline Conference tournament title this year, are an experienced group with seven seniors on their roster. Seniors Maxie Murphy and Morgan Humble are explosive players, capable of taking over the game offensively. Nichisti and junior Rachel Pease usually split time in the circle and both are effective.

Seymour last appeared in a state final in 2009 when the Wildcats defeated St. Joseph 1-0. They will make their 15th appearance in a state final when No. 1 Seymour (25-1) takes on No. 23 Sacred Heart Academy (15-10) on Friday in the Class M title game at 7 p.m. at Biondi Field in West Haven. Seymour has won eight championships.
